EA Sports announced today that the official video game for Euro 2012 will be available as a downloadable expansion pack for owners of the FIFA 12 game. US residents will be able to get the game for $19.99, while in the United Kingdom, the Euro 2012 game will cost £15.99. Euro 2012 will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms. The game will be released in North America and Europe on April 24, 2012, while it’ll be available the following day for the rest of the world.

Euro 2012 will feature all eight stadiums plus a new expedition mode.

“The all-new Expedition Mode designed exclusively for UEFA EURO 2012™ enables fans to build and compete with a customized squad against other European nations strategizing their journey through Europe. Plus, you will be able to relive dramatic moments from the UEFA EURO 2012™ qualifying campaign with challenges based on real-life matches, and replay key moments from the UEFA EURO 2012™ tournament.”

Also included in the game is custom Euro 2012 commentary, daily challenges after the tournament kicks off on June 8, no major gameplay changes (the game will run on the FIFA 12 engine), and all teams will have the latest squads.

So much for the rumors that Double Helix Games was going to release this game edition.

What do you think about EA’s announcement? Are you OK with the game only being available as an expansion pack and not on disc? Are you planning on getting the game when it comes out? And if you don’t have FIFA 12, are you planning on getting the game just so you can play Euro 2012?

Also, can EA making the game only available as a download be construed as a test to see what the commercial viability is of making a game only available for download? Is this something we may see in FIFA 13 or FIFA 14? What do you think?
