As the goals rained in at Old Trafford on Sunday, I was thinking about one thing. Could this be the first ever double digit point score for an APL game? Yes it could.

The previous highest was Newcastle’s 6-0 win against Aston Villa last season in Week 2 which won them 9.61 points

The winning margin of five goals away from home at the team second in the table were the contributing factors that gave City and astonishing 10.58 points, while United picked up 0.99, their lowest APL total. With the score at 1-3 City were primed to pick up 8.47 points, but the injury-time goal-fest boosted their final total by 2.11 points and helped give them a commanding looking 11.75 point lead.

With United suffering their first defeat this season, Chelsea had a great chance to make up some ground on the front two with a game against QPR and the possibility of the away win bonus. But with Chelsea’s leaky defence conceding again, and two players being sending off being sent off in the first half, the spoils went to QPR who move up two places to 8th – 0.03 points behind Norwich.

Swansea missed a great opportunity to make large strides up the league when they threw away their two goal lead at Molineux. After 80 minutes they were looking at winning 7.14 points for a 0-2 away win, but two late Wolves goals meant that the Swans had to settle for 3.26 points. Despite the comeback, Wolves drop one place to 17th.

Fifth place is now occupied by Spurs after their win at Blackburn. The narrow winning margin and Blackburn’s low league position meant that Tottenham’s reward for the win was a disappointing 6.18 points. But with Liverpool only managing a draw at home to Norwich, Spurs were able to the make up the 1.10 point deficit from the week before and now lie only 2.72 points behind Newcastle.

With the bottom three all losing there was no change at the foot of the table. Wigan though did make ground on those above them with their solid performance at Newcastle. The narrow defeat and high standard of opposition meant that Wigan scored 2.03 points for their efforts, 0.57 more than Bolton and 0.14 more than Blackburn.
