Inter Milan have sacked manager Gian Piero Gasperini after just three months. The Internazionale manager got his side off to a very poor start to the 2011-12 Serie A season after losing to Palermo, drawing Roma at home but then losing 3-1 away against Novara.

While the 0-0 result against Roma on Saturday may not have looked so bad on paper, it was a game that Roma dictated for large portions of the match. The expectations for this Inter Milan side, especially after the heights achieved under manager Jose Mourinho, are far greater than what Gasperini has achieved. So the axe fell — a little too quickly in my opinion especially since Gasperini was only in charge of Inter for five games.

Having said that, the 3-1 loss to newly promoted side Navaro on Tuesday night was embarrassing as was the 1-0 defeat to Trabzonspor in the Champions League last week.

A statement from Inter read: “Inter announces that today’s training session has been carried out by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi.

“The club wishes to thank Gian Piero Gasperini for the effort shown during his tenure and manifests its true disappointment for the interruption of the relationship with the coach.”

Gasperini told Inter Milan’s official website: “In the end, the results are the ones that determine everything. I am very disappointed. It’s a pity that our relationship had to be interrupted.”

Inter’s next game is against Bologna on Saturday. No announcement has been made regarding who will replace Gasperini.
