Who Should the USA Start Against Costa Rica?

usa formation Who Should the USA Start Against Costa Rica?

Friday night’s game for the United States men’s national team provides a perfect test for Jurgen Klinsmann to see what several US players who typically don’t get much playing time can do against a strong Costa Rica side (11pm ET, ESPN2).

The game, which will be played at Home Depot Center, will give Klinsmann a chance to see what players can do on the international stage such as Jeff Larentowicz, Chris Pontius and Tommy Chandler. What Klinsmann’s starting line-up will be is a mystery right now since several key players will be out (Dempsey is recovering from an injury in England, Beckerman and Cherundolo will join the USMNT in Belgium, while Zach Loyd and Heath Pierce are injured). With Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley not in the squad, it’ll be interesting to see who Klinsmann plays as central or defensive midfielders.

So, who should Klinsmann start? Above you’ll see the lineup of who I think should start against Costa Rica. But what do you think? Share your recommended starting eleven in the comments section below.

  1. Alan says:

Altidore and Donovan up front, Dempsey, Shea, Rogers, Beckerman in the middle, Bocanegra, Castillo, Chandler, and Spector as the back line. Not the best team overall, but it would be interesting to see how some people do.

  2. The Gaffer says:

Beckerman and Dempsey are not in the squad for Costa Rica, but I like the idea of Altidore and Donovan up front!

    The Gaffer

    • Alan says:

Bummer, I did not know that. I would replace them with Torres and Edu then.

    • Jacobinho says:

Alson Klinsmann said that Carlos will be in the center, he won’t play him at LB.

      Jozy Robbie
      Shea JFT
      Pearce Boca Goodson Castillo

It’s Costa Rica so we have to be a bit experimental and get the young guys on the field with our known talent. Building a relationship on the field consistently is going to be important going forward for the USMNT.

  3. Norfolk Enchants says:

Feilhaber should really be on the team. Better than a lot of these clowns.

  4. Murph says:

Spector over Chandler? Really? Isn’t Spector more a defensive Mid now?

    Altidore Agudelo
    Shea Edu Donovan
    Bocanegra Ream Goodson Chandler

  5. Angel says:

    Shea Torres Robbie
    Castillo Bocanegra Orozco Chandler

This is going to be a bit Similar Lineup that he used against Mexico

  6. Jose says:

    Shea Torres Rogers
    Chandler Boca Orozo Dolo

  7. kreston says:

landy d and jozy up top for sure, the lone striker method never has/will work for usa.. spector over timmy chandler though, lets be serious, chandler is too nasty!

  8. Jim says:

Replace Robbie with Klejstan and I think u have it. I think Rogers will come on as a sub again, and we’ll go 4-4-2 in the second half with the addition of Agudelo.

  9. wallace says:

    Howard (may see hamid)

agudelo and rogers come in around 70′

  10. dan says:

I think we have already learned that donovan should be a cam with freedom to roam.

  11. phil says:

Timmy Chandler should get some playing time.

  12. WSW says:

After today’s result klinsmann no MLS players in future.
