Swansea City have unveiled their away shirt for the 2011-12 Premier League season.

The Swans, who are the first Welsh team to ever play in the Premier League, will wear an orange Adidas kit as their change shirt for the 2011-12 season. Designed by Adidas, the shirt design is pretty simple with a white trim, white rounded collar and a band of white across the top of the chest.

When I first saw the shirt, my initial reaction was one of disappointment. It reminded me of a Middlesbrough shirt from the late ’70s, which was also designed by Adidas (albeit in red, not orange). To me, Swansea’s home and away shirt for the upcoming season is a perfect example of the gulf in creativity between Adidas and Umbro. Swansea’s kits last season, with the white home shirt and black away one, were some of the finest in the entire Football League. Now with Adidas, the shirts are picked from a template, feature less creativity and are a bit soulless in comparison to the Umbro designs.

Still, Swansea’s large contingent of supporters from the Netherlands (primarily Den Haag supporters) will be pleased by the selection of orange for the club’s away color. While it’s not tangerine, Swansea’s away performances may remind some of Blackpool (but hopefully with a far better defensive record than Ian Holloway’s side).
