Two rounds were played within one week as the US Open Cup continues to get more exciting. The teams in the lower levels of US soccer are fighting hard to make an impression against their MLS opponents. Round Three of the US Open Cup begins Tuesday night, June 28th.

Even though the match in Madison, Wisconsin started on time recently between the 56ers and the Chicago Fire’s PDL side, the heavy rain and lightning storm found a way to postpone the match from the 21st to Wednesday the 22nd. After a scoreless first half the Fire’s PDL side was able to put two past the 56ers — the final side representing the NPSL were thus eliminated from contention.

The hottest side right now with the hottest player in US Open Cup competition is the Richmond Kickers forward David Bulow scoring a brace to get five in two matches. Matthew Delicate, meanwhile, earned his brace to defeat the helpless Pittsburgh Riverhounds by a final of four goals to one.

Look at what’s going on with the rebirth of the Wilmington Hammerheads and their play in USL Pro and the US Open Cup. Head Coach David Irving has to be commended for finding a roster very quickly and having them perform very well. After a four goal destruction against the Central Florida Kraze of the PDL, they faced the Charlotte Eagles in the North Carolina derby.

Weston Roberts put a scare into the Legion Stadium faithful scoring a minute before halftime, then Darren Toby converted his chance in the 54th minute and it felt like the match was over. But once again it’s the magic of David Irving and how he found a way to fix these situations as Andriy Budnyy scored in the 63rd minute and it was game on.

Chris Banks found the equalizer in the 78th and both sides had plenty of chances to earn the match winner in regulation. Yet this match would be decided in extra time when, in the 103rd minute, Luke Mulholland found the match winner and the Hammerheads earned a trip to Salt Lake City for their round three match-up
