Blackburn defender Phil Jones is at Manchester United for a medical today and is poised to make a £16 million transfer from Lancashire to Old Trafford, according to Sky Sports and The Guardian.

Just like Jordan Henderson who signed for Liverpool today, the 19-year-old center-back is part of the under-21 England squad who will be playing in the European Championships this weekend.

Jones joined Blackburn’s youth academy in 2002, and made his senior debut in 2009 where he has made more than 34 appearances for Rovers.

Phil Jones is expected to sign a five-year deal at Manchester United.

  1. Matt says:

Wow, Ferguson isn’t effing around in this transfer window. This is a very smart signing. Smalling and Jones are the future United pairing. He will benefit quite a bit from learning from Rio and Vidic, just as Smalling has.

  2. James says:

Harsh blow for Rovers to lose him so quickly. He’s so much potential and has a lot of heart. Will be difficult seeing him play down the road from Blackburn.

  3. a good one for united, smalling and phils are the future defenders for both manchester united and the england national team. But i wil love to see man. United signs nasri, snijlder, pastore and modric. That will put to an end united mid-field problem.

    • El Tri 2014 says:

Is Nasri, Sneijder, Pastore/Modric the answer to Barca’s Busquets, Xavi, Ineista?

And to be honest, Barca plays without forwards, literally 7 men in front of the ball, with 3 defenders and GK. Only time the forwards stand out is during a counter.

      • MUFC77 says:

Building a midfield just to compete with Barcelona in a one of game is stupid. Our primary concern at the start of each season is always the league then champions league, Fa cup and league cup. The type of midfield needed to compete with Barcas style would get overrun in the EPL on a weekly basis.

In my opinion its no good winning the champions league if you cant be competitive in you own domestic league.

  4. Eric duah says:

I feel good for man untd signing phil jones. I love cris smalling.

  5. MUFC77 says:

We have been forced into signing Jones a year early because other clubs have shown a interest in him, I wouldn’t be surprised if we loan him straight back to Blackburn for the season. One for the future and we got him at a decent price..

  6. Gaz Hunt says:

A very good signing and, while a bit inflated, a decent price. Well done, Ferguson.

    • MUFC77 says:

With Mama Diouf going the other way it looks like it will be around 13m cash, just makes it a better deal all round.

Sunderland have apparently bid 12m for Bown,O’shea and gibson..

  7. MNUfan1991 says:

Ouch! 16M for a 19 year old. The transfer market is nutz!
That being said, in SAF we trust. He doesn’t always get everything right but one Cantona or Ronaldo outweighs 10 Djemba-Djembas :)
