In many ways, I prefer that most of the Big Four teams play on Sunday because it gives me a better chance of seeing the Other 16 on a Saturday. Of course, the Big Four is in flux, but Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United still draw the most eyeballs.

So, on Saturday, I had a chance to watch two matches so far. The first was West Bromwich Albion against Fulham, and the second was West Ham United versus Newcastle. Both matches couldn’t have been more opposite to each other. It was a joy to watch West Brom against Fulham because both clubs play some lovely football. Jerome Thomas was again on form for West Brom as the Baggies put in an impressive team performance. Fulham too were quite dangerous and it looked like either side could win it. Despite Fulham taking an well-deserved early lead through Zoltan Gera’s long-range shot, West Brom equalized through Youssuf Mulumbu, while Marc-Antoine Fortune grabbed the winner just before the half-time whistle blew.

Fulham had chance to equalize in the game and it was a pleasure to see Andy Johnson return to football after his 10-month injury. But it wasn’t the day for Fulham. With the three points, West Brom now move into fourth place. And what an incredible achievement that is for the Black Country side.

At West Ham United, it was a completely different story. Instead of the away side scoring first, it was the home club. And instead of the home club winning 2-1, it was the away side Newcastle United who thoroughly deserved to grab the three points. The Hammers started well after a goal from Carlton Cole, but Newcastle controlled the midfield and looked more adventurous moving forward, floating cross after cross into the box for Andy Carroll to knock down the ball for Kevin Nolan to score the equalizer, while Carroll headed in the winner in the second half to call it a day.

The television broadcast of the Hammers match did an excellent job of capturing the mood and body language of the West Ham United supporters. By staring into their faces, you can see that they’re frustrated with the team, think that they’re not good enough to stay up, don’t believe in Avram Grant and feel that their players aren’t playing with the passion and aggression that West Ham United supporters are used to seeing. This is a club that desperately needs a character like Carlos Tevez and the way he singlehandedly saved the club from relegation a few seasons ago.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Newcastle United on a well deserved win. The players worked hard throughout the match. Jose Enrique was an ox and definitely shone on a very wet day in East London.

One more thing, I’m loving how FoxSoccer.tv and the Fox Soccer iPhone app is allowing me to be more mobile when watching Premier League matches each weekend. I had some errands to run this morning. Previously I would have been chained to my TV set and would either had to tape the games via DVR and watch them later. But I ended up watching West Brom against Fulham on my iPhone while driving through traffic (I listened to the commentary when driving, and watched the action when I was at a red light), and when I got back home I was able to continue watching the game on FoxSoccer.tv. I then watched West Ham on my trusty DVR. If you don’t have the Fox Soccer app yet, I highly recommend the $7.99/month price tag.
