Saturday’s Bundesliga action featured the highs and the lows of Bundesliga life: from Mainz taking their winning streak to seven in a row and equalling the record for best Bundesliga start of all time, to Felix Magath’s Schalke stumbling to a disappointing loss at Nurnberg. Sunday’s action promises to be just as exciting.

VfB Stuttgart v Eintracht Frankfurt

Stuttgart have made a woeful start to their Bundesliga campaign, and are bottom of the table with just three points from their first six games. After losing Sami Khedira, Aliaksandr Hleb, Roberto Hilbert and Jens Lehmann in the summer, the club desperately needed to bring in ample reinforcements. Unfortunately, Stuttgart brought in very little in terms of quality players in the summer to reinforce their squad, and now they’re paying the price. Stuttgart are in desperate need of a win here. Christian Gross’ job could be on the line. I’m sorry Stuttgart fans, but I just can’t see where it’s going to come from. Frankfurt have been on a high, and Theofanis Gekas has been very hard-working up top and has smashed in his fair share of goals too. If Frankfurt get an early goal, I think it could really burst Stuttgart’s bubble and they could be there for the taking. 1-3.

Bayer Leverkusen v Werder Bremen

Leverkusen have suffered a series of key injuries, but have had the depth in squad to be able to cope with them. Eren Derdiyok and Richard Sukuta-Pasu have done a fine job in attack in the places of Patrick Helmes and Stefan Kiessling, and Sven Bender has been very handy while Michael Ballack is on the treatment table. Werder Bremen, on the other hand, have shown how thin they are as a squad. Injuries to Claudio Pizarro, Aaron Hunt and Torsten Frings made them look virtually useless against Inter in midweek, but one could put that down to playing Inter in Milan. I don’t see it that way. I think Werder Bremen could get a tonking here if they aren’t responsible defensively, and I don’t see where the goals are going to come from for the away side with really only Marko Marin there to orchestrate attacking moves. It could be the last nail in the coffin for Thomas Schaaf if his side are properly dismissed here. 2-0.

Borussia Dortmund – Bayern Munich

This is the big one. The one we’ve all been waiting for. Borussia Dortmund will know that this game is a huge one if they have any real hopes of mounting a title challenge this season. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best. Mainz have done it, now it’s Dortmund’s turn. Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered a disappointing defeat at home to the hands of Sevilla midweek, and that’s a match Louis van Gaal will have been watching with great interest. His side have been hit and miss this season, and are a whole thirteen points away from top spot, albeit with a game in hand. A win here is a must. It’s getting very nervy at Bayern Munich, and Louis van Gaal has to shoo the doubters away with a good result here against a side that look to be a serious title contender this season. For Dortmund, they know that it’s do or die. A win will bring confidence and a bit of calm, but a loss will dent morale because the players will know that they missed their chance to go one-up on the reigning champions. Should be a great match, and one that both sides really need to win. 3-2.
