Khedira Has Caught The Eye Of Real Madrid And Jose Mourinho After A Fantastic World Cup.

Sami Khedira’s already impressive career just seems to keep on getting better. From winning the Bundesliga title with Stuttgart at only 19 years old, to captaining the German U-21 side to European glory in 2009, to reaching the World Cup semi-final with the German national team in 2010, to now being considered a transfer target for Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

It seems, certainly, that only the sky is the limit for Germany’s young midfield star. After a terrible injury sidelined Germany captain Michael Ballack just weeks before the start of the 2010 World Cup, much was made in Germany about who would replace the talismanic midfielder. Torsten Frings, Simon Rolfes, Christian Traesch, and Heiko Westermann were all considered for the position. Loew, though, with one eye on the future, saw Khedira as the man for the job.

At only 23 years old, many believed Khedira’s inexperience would show and the German midfield would be overrun at the World Cup. This turned out not to be the case. In fact, it was Germany’s midfield who did the dominating, as would be seen especially against England and Argentina. Khedira, who was maybe overshadowed by the flair and attacking abilities of new young stars like Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil and midfield partner Bastian Schweinsteiger, was really the man at the center of all things good in the German XI.

Khedira’s ability to both win the ball in midfield and then to quickly orchestrate an attack was pivotal to the way Germany played at the World Cup. The quick-thinking of Khedira and Schweinsteiger, and the dynamism of both players, made Germany’s counter-attack nearly impossible to resist. It also has to be said that Khedira did a fantastic job making Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney nearly invincible when Germany dismantled both their sides by 4-0 and 4-1 scorelines respectively.

Now, as the transfer season rages on and changes in the Bundesliga are aplenty, Khedira’s name has been on the lips of many of the top managers throughout Europe. None as impressive, though, as Jose Mourinho. The man who really has achieved it all in Europe has now admitted that Sami Khedira would be perfect for his Real Madrid side in the upcoming season.

Mourinho spoke to the press recently about his transfer targets this summer (from Goal.com);

“We’re not going to be kings of the [transfer] market. I’ll bet on the usual philosophy of Madrid, signing players with projection, with more room for learning. We signed [Angel] Di Maria, who it’s true that he was expensive [€30 million], but he has great potential, and we go for [Sami] Khedira, with a huge room for improvement. It is a market direction that I love,” the Special One is quoted as saying by AS.

“We need a defender and a midfielder, but with balance and without dramatics. There is a great base from last season and that will give competition to the group. It is complicated, because when Madrid is interested in a player prices soar so astronomically.”

Jose Mourinho has also made it clear that Mesut Ozil is on Madrid’s radar. Though, Madrid have just recently signed Getafe’s Pedro Leon, and should they sign Khedira too, a defender will be the last signing Madrid make this summer, if Jose Mourinho’s quote is anything to go by.
