Schedule of Preseason Friendlies On US TV This July and August

Schedule of Preseason Friendlies On US TV This July and August

After Sunday’s World Cup Final, many soccer fans will be jonesing for more games to watch before the Premier League season kicks off again on August 14. But thankfully, there are quite a few summer preseason friendlies featuring European teams that you’ll be able to watch on US television.

Here’s the schedule of games thus far (all times Eastern):

  • Friday, July 16: Celtic v Man United, ESPN2, 7pm
  • Saturday, July 17: San Jose Earthquakes v Tottenham Hotspur, ESPN, 4pm
  • Wednesday, July 21: Celtic v Sporting, Fox Soccer Channel and, 8pm
  • Wednesday, July 21: Philadelphia Union v Man United, ESPN2 &, 7:30pm
  • Thursday, July 22: NY Red Bulls v Spurs, New York Football Challenge Tournament, Fox Soccer Channel and, 8.30pm
  • Friday, July 23: Man City v Sporting Lisbon, Fox Soccer Channel and, 8.30pm,
  • Sunday, July 25: New York Football Challenge 3rd place match, Fox Soccer Channel +, 1pm
  • Sunday, July 25: New York Football Challenge Final, Fox Soccer Channel +, 3:30pm
  • Sunday, July 25: Kansas City Wizards v Man United, Fox Soccer Channel, 6pm
  • Wednesday, July 28: MLS All-Stars v Man United, and ESPN2, 8.30pm
  • Saturday, August 7: LA Galaxy v Real Madrid, Fox Soccer Channel, 10.30pm
  • Sunday, August 8: Community Shield, Chelsea v Man United, Fox Soccer Channel, 10am

The list of summer friendlies is definitely not as many as what we saw two years ago when Setanta Sports seemed to be carrying a ton of preseason games. But times have changed. In the coming days to weeks, I expect to see more games added such as the annual Emirates Cup and other tournaments. GolTV usually shows a few friendlies involving European teams also.

Here’s the complete list of preseason friendlies being played by European teams this summer across the United States. And here’s the list of preseason friendlies being played by Premier League clubs around the world.

Out of the above games, which ones are you looking forward to watching the most? And which ones will you be attending in person?

San Jose v. Spurs is now on ESPN at 1pm PDT. Thanks Quakes and ESPN for changing the time AFTER I’ve made travel plans. COYS

  2. plainviewhotspur says:

and the match is Saturday, July 17 (your linked page has it listed on July 18).

  3. Brett says:

The Emirates Cup will be shown on GolTV. They have the tv rights to it through 2011. I believe it’s the first weekend in August.

I’m suprised ESPN2 isn’t showing the Union vs ManU match just on basis that its a ManU match and people will tune in. It is also sad to see that most of these matches are on FSC in SD. I guess they are trying to get us used to shitty picture quality after the amazing quality we had for the WC (except for those with Dish Network).

I will be looking forward to the Celtic matches, the Community Shield, and I might go to one of the NY Football Challenge matches.

“Wednesday, July 21: Philadelphia Union v Man United,, 7:30pm”

    awesome. not even on Classic.

btw – on the NY Football Challenge, did you mean “Fox Soccer Channel AND” or did you mean “Fox Soccer Plus”

    • The Gaffer says:

Fox Soccer Channel and Both will be showing the game(s) but not Fox Soccer Plus. I know that’s a rarity, but still quite an interesting development. Thanks for double-checking.

The Man U vs. Celtic game in Toronto on Friday July 16th, I will be there. I can’t wait. Going to be a great day.

  7. jose says:

im a galaxy supporter and im looking forward to playing real madrid so another one of there players has a secret meeting with the galaxy and signs a pre contract with us.

  8. Evan says:

I don’t know if you mentioned it or not but ESPN is showing all of Man City’s preseason games.

  9. Matt says:

The NY Football Challenge is not a tournament. Sunday’s matches are Spurs v. Sporting Lisbon and then Red Bulls v. Man City. Spurs kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.

Thanks Chris for the list. It is fortunate for all the fans especially the new ones in the US that the World Cup will end and the pre-season friendlies will start right up. Hopefully, both ESPN and FSC will devote sufficient resources to both pre and post game coverage to really hold the fans interest.

It has been a dream come true to come home from work and watch ESPN doing prime time soccer coverage. It’s important in my opinion that the new fan continues to have a lot of access to soccer programming not just game coverage. Let’s hope that some of the games not covered currently will be picked up by one network or another.

  11. ManUtdBuffaloFan says:

According to TV schedules on and – ESPN has the 7:30 pm ET-9:30 pm ET time slot for ESPN2 on Wednesday, July 21 listed as MLS Soccer – Teams TBA. No other MLS team is playing on that day and time other than the Philadelphia Union so ESPN2 has to be showing the Manchester United-Philadelphia Union friendly.
