Klose Looks To Write His Name In The History Books.

The World Cup’s magnificent 80-year history has seen many extraordinary players grace the tournament with their talents and skills. In 1958, Just Fontaine scored 13 goals in 6 World Cup matches, including 4 against West Germany, the defending Champions. In the same year, a 17-year old, imaginative Brazilian was first introduced to the world: Pele. That man, at age 17, would lift the World Cup in 1958 with his compatriots. Pele, though, would go on to hoist that famous trophy twice more in his career, in 1962 and 1970. He would become the only man to hold three world cup medals.

Brazil’s glorious tradition would continue to grow. In 1994, the World would be introduced to another goal-scoring sensation in the form of Ronaldo. Ronaldo would go on to win the World Cup with Brazil both in 1994 and in 2002, and would be the highest goalscorer in overall World Cups with 15 goals.

But what does Brazil have to do with Klose? Well, Miroslav Klose is currently on 11 overall World Cup goals, and with four more, he will historically be named one of the most clinical strikers of all time.

While Klose’s form has been dodgy lately, he still did manage a goal against Australia just days ago. Should he score a goal against Serbia and Ghana as well, that will take him to 13 overall World Cup goals. So, reaching Ronaldo’s record is a very possible target.

Klose has graced the German national team since 2001 and has been scoring goals in the Bundesliga since 1998. Klose’s pedigree as a goalscorer has earned him plaudits worldwide, as well as a host of awards and trophies. Klose, though, is nearing the end of his career. He has been replaced in the Bayern Munich starting XI by Thomas Mueller and Ivica Olic, and when he has played, he has done very little to impress.

Soon, Klose will most likely retire. German national team fans will have to say goodbye to a legend of their game. When Del Piero hangs up his boots, the Italians will grieve. When Figo retired, the Portuguese knew they wouldn’t see another like him for years to come. And now, the Germans will be bidding farewell to one of their own heroes, which makes reaching Ronaldo’s goalscoring tally of 15 overall World Cup goals that much more important.

Forever he will be honoured as one of the greatest finishers in the game should he reach this target, and forever he will be remembered in German football as a legendary goalscorer, one Germany has not seen since Gerd Muller graced the world’s stage.
