It’s Not So Easy Anymore, Is it England?

the sun newspaper cover Its Not So Easy Anymore, Is it England? The Sun newspaper is the type of tabloid filth that upsets people both in England and now, thanks to two condescending covers, people in the States.

You may remember that back in December, The Sun newspaper ran a headline on its cover which declared “E-A-S-Y” in reaction to the news of the 2010 World Cup draw which put England in the same group as the United States, Algeria and Slovenia.

Not only was the cover condescending but it was also disrespectful to a US team and nation.

Earlier today The Sun got up to it’s old tricks with a headline on its newspaper, which was a bit tongue in cheek, which read: “Here’s hopin’ that England United Shoot Some Totally Awesome Strikes Past The Goaltender In The Soccerball World Series Today.”

Yes, it was their attempt at humor but yet again it was condescending behavior from the paper’s editors. It’s another example of England’s feeling of superiority not only on the field but off it too where they think that Americans are uneducated when it comes to soccer. Nothing could be further from the truth especially considering the fact that more Americans visit The Guardian’s football site than the UK public does.

Just as there are still soccer haters in the United States press who are stil perpetuating their inane comments, members of the British press still show that they’re living in the stone age.

  1. Well after today may be some in the European media will take the rest of the world seriously. Lets see Greece-lost, France-draw no scores, England draws.

Has the balance in world football shifted. I submit after the early results it has. Spain can easily win but the top to both European dominance is over.

    1. A European nation has never won the World Cup when the finals are held off European soil, and half the titles have come by a host nation.

      England (1966 as host)
      France (1998 as host)
      West Germany (1954, 1974 as host, 1990)
      Italy (1934 as host, 1938, 1982, 2006)

This comparison with UEFA is just another reason why it is ridiculous that CONMEBOL have less bids than Africa and the same as Asia. They lay claim to a win in Europe (Brazil 1958) and have swept every World Cup finals played outside Europe.

    2. Too early to write the death notice for Europe. At the end of the day a draw is a good result for both teams, and though I think we’ll win, we could easily lose to a surprisingly solid Slovenia.

Overall, I think it’s a push. France and Uruguay both deserved to lose, honestly, but since they played each other they drew. Argentina beat a very ordinary Nigeria, but Argentina is supposed to beat Nigeria. Mexico’s draw with an — on paper — lesser South Africa kinda balances out the US draw with England in regards to CONCACAF, now if Honduras starts getting points, all hail CONCACAF.

The real winners so far would be the AFC and that’ll probably change tomorrow when the Aussies face Germany.

  2. I think you are all missing the biggest point here…

The Sun was giving away free Doritos!

GO USA!! WIN THAT SOCCERBALL WORLD SERIES!!

    lol

  3. The Sun “newspaper” is owned by Rupert Murdoch. The same guy who owns Fox news in the states. You know, the news network currently pumping all that American-supremacy/anti-British rhetoric about the BP oil spill. Looks like he’s playing the same game in both countries. The “Guardian”, by the way, is Britain’s leading source of Islamophilia, Anglophobia and America-hatred. So, when your own liberal media isn’t enough for your own home grown traitors, now you know where they come for extras.

  4. “they think that Americans are uneducated when it comes to soccer”
NO NO NO… Amercians are simply uneducated… not just football…. everything

  5. Oh, come on, like Americans aren’t arrogant about everything? Take a chill pill. Like someone said above, at least The Sun is funny.

    1. Andrew, it’s pretty sad that your one and only defense is to get into the silly debate about how football should be called soccer. Never mind the fact that the term soccer was coined by an Englishman. Never mind the fact that ‘soccer’ is still used regularly in England.

      Cheers,
      The Gaffer

      1. No it isn’t. No one in England uses that putrid word. The name of the sport is Football. End of.

  6. heres a quote from AMERICAN zac efron “i cant wait til USA play manchester united. i know he aint an example of the average american but i do think its funny. by the way im not english im welsh, so if anyone hates england its me
