Seeds are Announced, US in Pot with Asia/Oceania

FIFA announced the seeds and pots for Friday’s World Cup draw, and the main talking point for the US is that CONCACAF was put in the pot with Asia and Oceania as opposed to Africa.  Of course, the main talking point all over the world is that while the Hand of Henry may have gotten France into the World Cup Finals, the Hand of Blatter has taken away France’s seed even though they came within a penalty kick of winning the last World Cup.

These are the four pots:

South Africa (the hosts), Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina and England

Euro Pot

Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland

CONCACAF, Asia, Oceania Pot

US, Mexico, Honduras, Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and New Zealand

Africa, South America Pot

Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay

By definition, unless France is drawn against South Africa, wherever France is drawn will be the Group of Death.

The best case scenario draw for the US is possibly:

  • South Africa
  • Greece
  • Uruguay
  • United States

The worst case scenario draw for the US is possibly:

  • Brazil
  • France
  • Ivory Coast
  • United States

All will be known on Friday!

  1. Portugal’s group might be the group of death instead of France. It will depend on the other pots of course, but I don’t think France is the only factor determining the hardest group.

  2. It is funny, but it all looks like a huge uphill climb of us or US…it is.

But look at it from the other nations perspective,
    The top seeds,
Then one team from a tough European pot,
    Some tough African teams.

Now which team do you want from the US pot?
If US isn’t your last choice it is second to last.

The US Group will almost certainly become the group of death,

  3. “Now which team do you want from the US pot?

Probably true, but what makes the USA dangerous isn’t our ranking or skill, it is our complete unpredictability. It really can be night and day difference depending on which USMNT shows up on the day. Confederations Cup this year being a prime example.

If we’re firing on all cylinders even the seeded team is not safe. But we’re just as likely to get blown out by one of the lesser European or better African teams, if USMNT shows up and starts playing like a bunch of sleepwalkers who act like they have never played a match together before.
