  1. Chris in Belfast says:

24 sounds about right for the US right now, but 9 for Mexico? I should admit that I haven’t seen the team play that much, but… 9?

  2. Steve says:

US, whatever. But Mexico at nine is a laugher. Maybe if the world cup was played in Azteca with CONCACAF refs, Mexico could be ranked at #9. But on a neutral field with no free penalty kick goals, Mexico is barely in the top 20.

  3. Bolacuadrada says:

The US will be top 16. Mexico and Honduras will not make it to the second round.

  4. Trey says:

Disgusting to see how high Mexico is. Nine people voted on this? Or did Kartik and Farley both out Mexico #1 and the USA #32 to skew the voting to make it look like others agree with your warped opinion.

Also, based on what we saw of Denmark the other day with a lot of reserves they must be in the top 10. That team would kick Mexico’s behind and the cheap, diving, weak el tri would freeze to death also.

Mexico struggled to beat us at home with its full team and Denmark killed us with a “B” team, yet Kartik and Farley rank Mexico higher. Show you are so very biased.

    • Only one voter had Mexico outside the top 13 in the tournament and only one had the US as high as 16th, so it wasn’t simply Richard and I skewing the voting to make it look like others agree with our warped opinion.”

In fact, five of the voters had the US LOWER THAN ME

I did have Mexico ahead of Denmark as did Richard. If you found fault with that, it’s a reasonable opinion on both ends.

  5. Donnie says:

here we go again with the mexico love from kartik and his cronies.

Kartik, maybe you can explain why WE ALWAYS BEAT MEXICO?

Has Mexico beaten Spain this summer? Did Mexico have a two goal lead on Brazil at halftime? Have they EVER even been able to play with Brazil in a big match?

Our results are consistently better than them in CONCACAF. They struggle against the same Central American teams we always beat. We beat Honduras four times this year, they lost to them twice and beat them once on a disputed Penalty. We beat T&T twice and they drew with them. They drew Canada last year for heaven’s sake!

You are sooooooooooooooo biased and ought to stop writing about this sport if you cannot be objective.

    • Kartik, maybe you can explain why WE ALWAYS BEAT MEXICO?

We lost to them twice this year and still have never won in Mexico

Has Mexico beaten Spain this summer? Did Mexico have a two goal lead on Brazil at halftime? Have they EVER even been able to play with Brazil in a big match?

Mexico has beaten Brazil SIX times since 1999 in competitive matches. Brazil has only beaten Mexico in the same period once in a competitive match, but has won friendlies vs El Tri.

They struggle against the same Central American teams we always beat. We beat Honduras four times this year, they lost to them twice and beat them once on a disputed Penalty. We beat T&T twice and they drew with them. They drew Canada last year for heaven’s sake!

Yes we beat Honduras and they struggle. No doubt. They also crushed Costa Rica at Saprissa while we embarrassed ourselves. At home they really dominated the Ticos while we needed a late stoppage time equalizer.

We also lost in Port of Spain last year and struggled this time.

So you see, this goes both ways. Some teams match up better than others against smaller powers. We match up better with Honduras than Mexico, and they match up better with Costa Rica than we do.

You are sooooooooooooooo biased and ought to stop writing about this sport if you cannot be objective.

Perhaps so. I have to explain to my colleagues why I had the US higher on my ballot than 5 of the other 8 voters. Perhaps it was bias that does not allow me to be as critical of the USMNT chances as others who I respect are.

  6. Bolacuadrada says:

I see a clear biased opinion here. These experts are Maradona fans (smoking something). Look, even though Mexico has beaten Brazil several times none has been a really meaninfull game. I mean head to head, “A” team against “A” team, elimination game, mano a mano (spanish), mata mata (portugues). Even the 1999 Confederations Cup final was no that credible since it was played in Azteca Stadium and as everybody knows Brazil was fieldind the Olympic team (also known as B team). The other official games did not mean much since they were first round or group games as in Copa America 2001, 2004, 2007 and in Confederations Cup 2005. They were so meaninless that at the end the loser of those games (Brazil) ended up as the Champion in 3 of those competitions. That is not all, in 3 of those competitions Brazil was playing with their B team. Ranking Mexico ahead o an European team is just not serious. In fact Mexico rarely plays friendlies against European teams and that makes them keep a good record of wins and loses. Beating South American and Central American national teams is not big deal. Unless it is a game like the USA taking Argentina out of Copa America 1995, Honduras taking out Brazil of Copa Ameica 2001 or the USA taking out Spain of Confederations Cup 2009. Mexico world cup record against European teams is terrible and with Aguirre’s team it will not get any better. The so called experts better hope that Mexico is seeded with Asian, African and some South American nations otherwise this will not be a memorable World Cup.

  7. Anton says:

You can argue here and there about teams, but Mexico clearly should be ahead of the US.

No ifs and or buts, Mexico got better as the year went on and the US got worse. Additionally, Mexico typically does better in the World Cup than we do.

I do have to ask how Serbia ended up ranked 11th, ahead of Portugal? That’s a strange one to me. Also, I thought Slovakia and Switzerland both winners of tight, balanced qualifying groups would be a bit higher also.

  8. Matthew N says:

While I think the poll may suffer from a tiny bit of favoritism and a tiny bit of “what have you done for me lately,” it seems pretty accurate overall. I don’t understand how you all get upset that Mexico is ranked higher than the US. Mexico is a much more consistent and much more talented squad… it just so happens that the US likes to overachieve.

    • Chris in Belfast says:

I’m certainly not against Mexico being ahead of the US, but 9? I find it hard to accept that there aren’t at least 10 teams in that field better than Mexico.

Again, not particularly upset with the US’s ranking, just very surprised at Mexico’s. (Now watch them win the damn thing…)

      • Nine people voted and with the exception of one out lier, a consensus developed on Mexico more than any other squad from outside Europe or Brazil. That’s part of the reason they ended up so high because nobody had them in the bottom 10.

Mexico has gotten out of the group stage of the last four world cups and the last seven Copa America’s so it is difficult realistically to put them outside the top 15 anyhow, especially when they have played very well the last several months.

  9. Raul says:

The US is in real trouble if Donovan cannot clear his head to take a penalty kick. The 2 minute, 20-kiss ritual that he use to do as a tribute to his wife is now reminding him of his recent divorce by purposeful NOT doing it. He has 7 months to do something about it.
