Mexico 2: USA 1: Americans Fail to Shake Azteca Curse

us mexico 286x300 Mexico 2: USA 1: Americans Fail to Shake Azteca Curse

Javier Aguirre took a chance on Miguel Sabah. Former Coaches Sven Goran Eriksson, Ricardo LaVolpe and Hugo Sanchez all hardly rated him – it paid off big time today with a game winning goal. Sabah, who struggled at Guadalajara as a youngster had never been capped for Mexico at any level until he was 28. An amazing story, indeed: from Chivas washout to national hero.

Charlie Davies’ early goal gave the US an un-expected lead, but after that the American shape collapsed and defending was at times shambolic. Yet, Mexico left it late but did get the result they needed.

After Davies’ brilliant goal, the US continued to look organized and in control until Israel Castro scored what can be described fairly as a fluke goal with a blast from outside the area that rattled the post and went in. But from that point forward, the US stopped playing football until halftime. Gio Dos Santos, surplus to requirements at Spurs in the EPL ran circles around the US defenders and El Tri could have felt hard done not to get a second goal.

Early in the second half, the US settled back in and fought competitively with Mexico for 10-15 minutes. But then Javier Aguirre rolled the dice and came up big.

Aguirre’s subs changed the game totally. Not just Sabah the goal scorer, but Nery  Castillo was a pest even though he arguably should have been sent off. Carlos Vela was also  good. Bob Bradley’s subs, on the other hand failed to change the flow of the game, and conspicuously absent was Jonathan Spector who without question, would have performed better than Steve Cherdundolo on the right side of defense.

The officiating, while far from perfect did not affect the game except for the incident which should have seen Nery Castillo sent off for grabbing Charlie Davies in a way that could have caused injury. But on actual foul calls, the official was about as good as you will get from a CONCACAF official at Azteca. While that means he wasn’t very good, it also means he wasn’t as bad a most officials for EL Tri games in Mexico.

The result was well deserved. While the Mexicans left it late, three points for El Tri was the only fair result.

Steve Sampson remains the only USA coach to get a point in Mexico City.

  1. kyle says:

I really hope all the Brian Ching PR people will stop calling for him to start upfront. He did absolutely nothing in the time he played.

Michael Bradley started at Heerenveen as an attacking midfielder and starts at Borussia Mochengladbach as a attacking midfielder, yet he is played as a defensive midfielder.

Jonothan Spector had a great Confederations cup setting up two goals with pin point crosses, yet Cherundolo starts infront of him.

Carlos Bocanegra needs to be dropped from this team.

Charlie Davies is the most dangerous striker the US has had in a long time.

Oguchi Onyewu on his day is one of the best center halves in the world. He was absolutely immense today, not only winning the ball but bringing the ball up out of the back.

Possesion is Power. Fire Bob Bradley replace him with Dick Acdovaat.

    • jeneria says:

I couldn’t agree more with you about Ching. He only shows up in exhibition games and when we’re pummeling the weakest of the CONCACAF. Otherwise, he’s a waste of space up front.

Agreed on Bradley as well. Playing him defensively makes him reckless and sloppy.

Agreed on Spector and Bocanegra. What the hell kind of captaincy was that today? You stand there while the second goal is scored? The most he did was to break up the fracas and honestly, Howard did a better job.

Davies really inspired today. Gooch was, for the most part, the best player outside of Howard today.

Once again, Donovan was nowhere. He did nothing. Was he pouting at not being captain?

  2. Rob says:

    1. I know it isn’t an excuse, but I cannot get over how inconsistent the Refereeing was today. Just mind boggling.
    2. When I heard Ching was starting I was worried, and he proved me right.
    3. Sitting back after going into the lead is getting sickening now. Screw Bob Bradley.
    4. I hate the Mexicans even more than I did before with some of the crap they pulled today. It was nothing out of the ordinary, but it showed how desperate they were.
    5. Lucky bounce led to the game-winner.

Ugh, disappointing to say the least.

    • EL Cabron says:

      Hey Rob

Chinga tu madre, pinche gringo pendejo !!!

      • Rob says:

Hilarious. Funny how you wouldn’t type that in English, though.

We’ll see what you have to say when Mexico doesn’t even qualify.

        • Roberto says:

          Hey Rob,

Do you actually need someone to translate that for you? …Really??

Stop being a hater. I’ll cheer you up, here’s a joke:

One gringo tells another gringo: We should go to Mexico on vacation man!!
          The other gringo: Why?
The first gringo: I was told that you can have all the sex and all the beer that you can handle for free!!
The other gringo: Who told you that?
The first gringo: My mum and my sister, they just came back!!

P.S. I speak four languages: Spanish, English, French and Italian. How many can you speak? Would you like me to show you how one can insult somebody merciless in all four languages? I thought so, hick.

          • Berlin says:

            Stay classy Mexico.

          • Rob says:

Hmm, a lot of assumptions there. Hick is a loose word to throw around as well, considering you have no idea where I grew up (somewhere where Spanish is rarely spoken). On the other hand, French is my forte, along with a little bit of German.

Ironic that you told me to “stop being a hater,” yet you try to insult me with a terrible joke. As Berlin said, “Stay classy, Meixco.”

        • Federico says:

          Hey Rob:

I also speak four languages, the same as Roberto, and also have a joke for you!

          It goes like this:

Q.- “How do you call someone that speaks three languages?

          A.- “Trilingual”

Q.- “How do you call someone that speaks two languages?

          A.- “Bilingual”

Q.- “How do you call someone that can only speaks one language?”

          A.- “GRINGO”

A good one, and very true, Don’t you think?

          • Rob says:

No, not really, considering I speak two and a third very loosely. Once again, a lot of assumptions by Mexican fans. Lets just say I haven’t dropped any words that denote a Mexican in any of my comments, have I?

            Stay classy.

  3. Jack says:

Ching’s gotta go, Bocanegra didn’t do anything, where the heck was Dempsey, Holden came out and showed some good energy and play

  4. steve says:

Carlos Bocanegra is really pretty awful. he interviews well and looks good with the arm band but plays at an amateur level.

this was really a pretty awful game for the USMNT. Davies was brilliant and was Bradley’s best strategic move. The rest of the team was flat and the defense was absolutely pathetic.

  5. Joey Clams says:

I was pleased with the effort. Bocanegra was always going to be the liability. Michael had a poor match.

I agreed with starting Cherundolo, believe it or not, and I was pleasantly surprised that Bradley pulled an early double sub.

Dempsey did lay it out a bit, though. Feilhaber bordered on the indisciplined but I was glad to see someone stick up for an injured teammate.

Mexico are scum and I thought that the ref was only a little in the bag.

The good news is that Davies and Holden are indeed keepers.

  6. Joey Clams says:

    And Onyewu was immense.

  7. Andy says:

Really disgusted with the bunkerball. Our midfield plays too deep with no shape. I love Davies. The mexican players were desperate, dominated possession, and won. Oh well. The refs were iffy, but we lost because we have no plan when we have the ball, and our defense isn’t as good as Bradley seems to think it is. We’re not Italy, and when we play at altitude you need to be able to knock the ball around and catch your breath like Mexico did midway in the 2nd half before the final push for the winning goal. We never have a plan and I can’t understand why. Mexico has better players, but we can’t use the talent we have and it shows whenever the US plays a good team. It hurts to watch because our guys fight so hard!

    • Larry says:

FIRE BIUNKER BOB! WE’LL NEVER DO ANYTHING IN A WORLD CUP WITH THIS COACH. THE SPAIN GAME WAS A FLUKE, PEOPLE. WE CANNOT LIVE OFF ONE DECENT PERFORMANCE FOR FOUR YEARS. WE ALMOST DREW WITH CUBA UNDER BRALDEY FOR GODS SAKE!

  8. Eric in Baltimore says:

Kartik, I disagree that the officiating didn’t effect the game. That ref was completely intimidated by the atmosphere and was out of his depth.

    • lu says:

Thios ref was a cheat. We had it stolen from us today without a doubt. The ref by booking Gooch, DeMerit and Boca in the first half prevented them from being agressive in the 2nd.

    • Rex says:

Officiating impacted the game, but the point is that the USA was on the road in Mexico. It’s expected. Just because the USA doesnt ever get a home field advantage, doesnt mean other countries cant either.

  9. Phil says:

When Dempsey turned his back on that shot I felt sick, dude needs to throw his body in front of shots for the cause, second Ching sucks!!!!!!! Third Bradley has to go, bring in a coach who seems to give a crap! Fourth this ref can go to hell, horrible officiating like usual from CONCACAF refs! They are the worst, honestly USA V MExico A suqad to A squad on any given day in a place other than the crappiest, dirtball country named MEXICO USA wins!

    • EL Cabron says:

      Hey Phil

      Suck mexican pennis !!!

      • Phil says:

Hey EL Crack head go to hell

        • Cristobal says:

haha dude youre pathetic just face it and admit it. Mexico proved out to be the best team here and they played and USA has had 25 games to get used to the “crappiest dirtball country” you speak of. Which also happens to have the highest percentage of retired americans residing there, and the biggest city in the world which is far more beautiful than NYC that damn rathole. just face it, this year Mexico has made a comeback and outplayed them twice. 5-0 might i remind you. that is no luck. thats a combination of pure Aztec, Mexican skill and stupid, desperate American “skill.”

        • jimmy says:

you guys are the crack heads. you guys buy from the mexicans

      • Pablo says:

        It’s penis, tontopollas, not pennis.

        • Roberto says:

          Hey Pablo,

I’m glad you are an expert on that issue, so you can lecture other people in this forum on the issue. Keep it up!!

“Tontopollas”; is that Appalachian or Yahoo dialect?

  10. jeff says:

Why do we keep going into this defensive shell? When are we going to learn that we need to capitalize on the energy that’s created after a goal and continue to push the ball forward?! But no, like with Brazil we just kept handing them the ball so that they could try and score again. And why did Bradley start Ching? That’s bad coaching.

  11. Brad says:

Bocanegra standing outside the box while Mexico scores just pisses me off.

  12. Jimbo says:

Rob: we mexicans beat you exactly like you americans use to beat us: with ugly goals…so we gave you your “very own medicine”, that is why you are so upset…

1.- i agree with you: your goalkeeper should have had a yellow card for wasting time when USA had the lead and during the tie and one of your defenders, i believe cherundolo, should have gone home early with a red card for the foul to Gio Dos Santos in the middle of the field…
    2.- No Comments
3.- BB does not know how and when to make the subs…and he did exactly what i and many mexicans said: score and then wait for the game to be over…and that´s a huge mistake specially in Azteca stadium
4.- i feel sorry for you on this one, we did nothing special and still beat you and YES we are desperate because soccer is like the religion of many mexicans and not going to the World Cup is and will always be a deadly sin, unlike you that a win, lose or tie does not matter because most of you are not pasionate about the game
5.- The “Lucky bounce” that you mention is the kind of goals you score in Columbus…and the only way you can win…

aaah what a nice feeling it is to be the winner…see you in South Africa! :D

    • Tim says:

To compare the advantage that the US gets at columbus to that of azteca stadium, you must be partying really hard right now.

    • Rob says:

Hmm, Jimbo sounds like a really mexican name, at least El Douceface gave himself a creative name.

Oh, and the “see you in South Africa!” comment; that could come back to bite you.

  13. Phil says:

This is horrible! Bradley needs to go, this is pathetic! CHING you have to be kidding me!

  14. Phil says:

Jimbo your a moron! MEXICO sucks, we will beat you any given day outside your dirty lil country

    • Dr. Phil says:

an idiot cannot bring forth a suitable defense against an adverse situation and resorts to racism to put forth the notion that he is still superior. this is just a game dude, why become so defensive? seems like you can’t accept a good defeat from a team that may not have played that well but still kicked your ass.

    • Phil's mom's got herpes says:

Yeah dirty and little but it scare the s.hit out of your mediocre national team, they don’t have the balls to win here. And Mexico have beaten the US many times in your country so it’s actually the US the one who sucks my friend.
You people should stick to your bastardized version of rugby and leave FOOTBALL for real man to play.

      xoXXXOXOOOooo;)

  15. BC says:

I must have missed something, was Donovan on the field?

    • jeneria says:

Well, they showed him in the graphic but you could have fooled me. Once again tough game with a ton on the line and Landyass can’t be bothered to show up. All that b.s. about him growing up and being a leader makes me sick. For years I’ve watched him tear it up in MLS, tear it up in friendlies, and tear it up against low-quality opponents. But put him in a game that matters (outside of the flukish Spain game) and he disappears. Just like Ching.

  16. iVÁN says:

¡¡¡¡MÉXICO!!!. THE GIANT HAS AWAKENED.FEEL YOUR POWER USA!

  17. Phil says:

    BRADLEY NEEDS TO GO NOW!

  18. former_mls_fan says:

USA had one possession where we completed +4 consecutive passes and kept possession. Tri had possession for the rest of the match. Honestly, it looked like Real Madrid versus DC United. Pathetic. College coach Bradley should go. His legacy is the Gold Cup final and the rebirth of Mexican soccer. I agree with the above comment at American racists who bring their hate into soccer forums, fuck off.

  19. Jimbo says:

thank you for proving my point Phil…and yes that “we will beat you any given day outside your dirty lil country” is exactly what we want…

  20. Phil says:

Look in all honesty it not racist just frustration!

  21. The Gaffer says:

Sorry lads, but I thought Mexico completely outplayed the US throughout the match (except for the first 10 minutes) and deserved to win. They were more poised, had more possession and looked more likely to score. Personally I thought the referee did well under the pressure. He wasn’t perfect, but he didn’t give Mexico a penalty when Vela dived in the box. Other referees may have pointed at the spot on that one.

Back to the drawing board for the US.

    Cheers,
    The Gaffer

  22. stupidgringos says:

We proved again how superior we are!!!!
    Viva Mexico!!!!!

  23. LI Matt says:

Every four years when the Hex begins, we all say “OK, Azteca is a write-off and Saprissa is a write-off” and then talk about the other eight games. So, in the context of qualifying for the World Cup, this loss doesn’t really damage anything. If we win our two home games and win in Port of Spain, then nothing else matters.

    ***

Gio Dos Santos, surplus to requirements at Spurs in the EPL….

Getting to watch him for 180 uninterrupted minutes in the Swamp and here, I realized who Gio reminds me of: Luka Modric. A slightly-younger, better-looking, almost-as-good-but-not-quite Luka Modric.

Which makes ‘Arry’s problem obvious — he’s already got Luka Modric, what’s he supposed to do with a second one?

    • Tim says:

Luka Modric is a central midfielder, while gio does either on the wings or up top with a lot of freedom. Modric isn’t a p@ssy either.

    • eplnfl says:

I am with you on this Matt. A defeat had been penciled in on this one. Bradley is a coach that is not afraid to lose and knows you can’t win them all. Now did the defensive strategy today result from a sense that the only way to even get a point was to play defense and hope as almost happen that if you could break lose a striker for a score when Mexico was all up in the US zone that you had the best chance for a draw. We were not that many minutes away from a draw.

So, to those that wish to praise Mexico, think that they were almost minutes away from a draw that would of put them in a terrible position to qualify. The story line could easily be that Bradley’s strategy to gut out a point in Mexico almost pays off, late Mexico score keeps Mexico in the WC hunt. True enough when you give it some thought and not a knee jerk reaction.

Not that I agreed with all of Bradley’s choices today. Far from it. Spector should of been on the field, should of Altidore started and then bring in Ching, hoping to score early and then let Ching does what he does best, why not get Holden in earlier and couldn’t a half time adjustment or tactical change get Donovan more involved.

BTW, the calls where bad and hurt the Yanks.

    • Roberto says:

Just FYI, It is Giovanni DO Santos, not “Dos”.

  24. Ken says:

Bradley is so outclassed against decent coaches. He looks good in CONCACAF, but let’s review our road performances in qualifying, 1-0 win over Barbados, 1-0 win over Guatemala, 1-0 win over Cuba, loss to T&T, draw with El Salvador, blowout loss at Saprissa and now a loss to Mexico.

    BOB BRADLEY = FAIL

    • Tim says:

is del bosque? considered a decent coach? The altitude and smog were too much for the players to overcome it had nothing to do with coaching.

  25. jeff says:

I think it was Bocanegra who dodged that ball. WTF, seriously, he should get a punch in the face for that. Way to throw it down in Azteca Carlos……

    • DrJonS says:

Boca was slow closing down the first goal and dodged the shot. He was completely out of position on the second, leaving donovan to play defense 1v1, with help from DeMerit. Boca can been seen standing at about the 18 as the shot comes to Mexico and goes in. He looked terrible. 2 goals, 2 from the left.

  26. Carter 4 says:

Rutgers vs. Cincinnati on September 7. Go RU!!

  27. Carter 4 says:

    Rutgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Jimbo says:

    BOB BRADLEY = EPIC FAIL

And yes, i understand your frustration Phil, that´s how we felt the day after Columbus…

  29. Mr.T says:

    @Rob,
You said:” I hate the Mexicans even more than I did before with some of the crap they pulled today.”
By crap do you mean =FUTBOL? Something the U.S knows very little about.

Why do U.S fans ALWAYS blame the ref? His decisions didn’t affect the score. If anything it many instances it benefited the U.S by not showing the red to a couple of players. Stop complaining. Do I need to remind you of the 2002 WC Mex vs u.s.a, the hand ball that was not called, which at a crucial game was in total benefit of the u.s.a? Just accepted, your Papi is back, the gigante is getting up.

The best team won, dont deny it. Gio ran circles around the U.S defense. Landon …was not really a factor.
So this was the U.S “a” team…hmmm….ok. I think your B team played better, i mean they lost by 5, but they attacked more, they tried to play.

    @Jimbo
I dont agree with you. Mexico could never win the way U.S has in the past. Because mexico plays futbol, they are always moving the ball, attacking, creating opportunities. Dont think i have ever seen mexico waiting for 80+ minutes with 8+ men in the back. Mexico won today, because they played better, they are the better team with the more talented squad.

    • Mark says:

They are the better team no doubt if you go man for man which is why it is all the more criminal that they always resort to diving and whining to gain an advantage. If Mexico simply played futbol they’d be better than the USA or Costa Rica but instead they dive and look for calls and generally don’t believe in the rules or integrity of the game.

    • Rob says:

“By crap do you mean =FUTBOL?”

Yeah, since “=FUTBOL” is about trying to harass an injured player on the ground while he can barley walk. Cute.

  30. Jimbo says:

@ Mr. T: i was not talking about the form or the way of playing, i was talking about the goal, i mean Juarez passes the ball but bounces a bit in the box and then Sabah shots and scores that´s how the US make the goals in Columbus, corner kick then some bounces and damarcus beasley or bradley or donovan shots and scores…i don´t know if i am explaining myself…don´t get me wrong Mexico literally knocked out the US with the way of playing, i was refering to the goal only…

  31. Tim says:

@ Mr. T you do realize that red cards usually influence that game.

  32. Mr.T says:

    @Mark,
diving? Not saying it doesnt happen, but are you saying the U.S players never dive???? lol..I didnt see any dive in this game, i saw real contact, by U.S defenders who had no other option but to foul the talented mexican players.
” If Mexico simply played futbol …” LOL. You need to rephrase that: “If U.S played real futbol they would get respect…” but instead they insist on only playing defense. By the way, Mexico is a better team than U.S and Costa Rica. I think Mexico and Costa Rica are the top 2 futbol teams in the concacaf.

    @Tim,
Yes i know red cards influence a game…soo? There were no red cards in this game. I think the ref should’ve shown atleast 2 to U.S players and maybe one to Mexico (nery). But he didnt and that benefited the U.S cause.

Mexico has shown improvement. They keep getting better, playing better, but they still need to work on some areas.

    • Tim says:

What do card do you give when one player chokes the other. Hands to the face is an automatic red card. You are definately getting a little too excited by a win that should’ve been expected.

  33. bookmakers says:

Mexico is just a better team really…and they know the USA well

  34. MARIO says:

  35. AgentCooper says:

Hey, let’s give it up for Phil Schoen. He was fantastic today, and it makes me wish he was the regular commentator for U.S. national team games.

    • The Gaffer says:

AgentCooper, I agree. Phil Schoen was a class act today and is definitely the best American-born soccer commentator in the business.

Balboa started out OK but I got a bit sick of him talking about himself later on in the commentary.

      Cheers,
      The Gaffer

      • AgentCooper says:

Gaffer, first, I agree Balboa was a little much to take at times (how many times did he mention the altitude – I lost count after about 25 times); but Phil Schoen more than made up for it.

Second, thanks to you and Kartik for all you have done. It’s amazing to see the coverage of this game, both in the MSM and in the blogs, and I think that you are both a big part of that too. Cheers to you both.

  36. big G says:

SO MR KARTIK I READ UR OTHER PAPER AFTER MEXICO BEAT US IN THE WORLD CUP SAYING HOW U.S HAD A “B” SQUAD AND HOW A BAD PENALTY CALL RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF THE USA. SO TELL ME NOW WAT EXCUSE ARE U GONNA MAKE THAT THEY WERE PLAYING IN HIGH ALTITUDE HAHA. ITS FUNNY HOW U USED THAT ISRAEL CASTRO’S GOAL WAS A FLUKE. THAT GOAL WAS A TREMENDOUS STRIKE NO GOALIE WOULD HAVE STOPPED THAT. THE WHOLE 90 MIN I SAW MEXICO IN CONTROL BEING PATIENT AND MOVING THE BALL EXCELLENT. I SAW USA ON THE DEFENSIVE WITH ALL 11 PLAYERS BACK AFTER THEY SCORE THE GOAL.IT WAS LIKE MEXICO WAS JUST TOYING WITH THEM MOVING THE BALL FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I HOPE WE ALL REALIZE THAT MEXICO DOESNT PLAY THE PUSSY STYLE THAT USA PLAYS JUST WAITING ON A COUNTER OR ON SET PLAYS. MEXICO IS JUST BETTER THAN USA. OUR YOUNG PLAYERS LIKE VELA GIO AND JUAREZ SHOWED THE USA DEFENDERS THERE GONNA HAVE A LOT MORE BAD YEARS AHEAD OF THEM

  37. Actually Mr. G, I said Mexico dominated and deserved the Gold Cup win- Daniel F. wrote the piece on the pk call. I think they dominated too today- Castor’s goal was a fluke, but as I said in the piece the better team most certainly won. Sabah, I am very happy for. He deserved this. Obviously I wanted the US to win, but Sabah scoring the winner instead of a Nery or a Guardado, I think is something we should all embrace.

  38. Bernard says:

    jajajajajajaja
what do you have to say now Donovan?

  39. Tom says:

At least American soccer players and fans are classy. Throwing trash on Donovan taking a corner and needing a riot squad just to play a soccer game in Mexico show how ridiculous and out of control their fans are.

  40. So Cal Soccer Fan says:

First, the good news: The fact that we started Brian Ching and only lost 2-1 in Mexico City is quite an accomplishment! That being said…

Bradley sucks as a coach; you should never have a dad coached national team! He’s never played one minute of national team soccer, or professional soccer… and it shows! I say bring in Preki as USMNT coach, and do it now. Bob Bradley just stinks…

It seemed like Bocanegra was so slow on the ball that half of his passes were blocked. Slow on his feet, too. Let him hang out with Beasley and watch these games on TV.

And Brian Ching? This ain’t MLS, Coach! Ching is the slowest and least skilled player on either team. If he was under 6 foot he couldn’t even cut it in MLS. He cannot even receive a flat pass to his feet and control the ball. If Mexico had played Ching up top then we’d have easily gotten the victory…
    My USA Player Ratings:
    Howard 7, Cherundolo 4, DeMerit 5, Onyewu 7, Bocanegra 2, Donovan 5, Clark 3, Bradley 3, Dempsey 4, Ching 1, Davies 7, Holden 4, Feilhaber 3, Altidore 3

  41. LarryKann says:

Reason they threw trash at Donovan was because Mexicans don’t like people who pee on their stadium…:P

  42. big G says:

MR KARTIK YOU ALSO WROTE ON HOW MEXICO NEEDS TO WIN ON PENALTY KICKS IN THE GOLD CUP. WERE THE OTHER 4 GOALS IN THE WORLD CUP DUE TO PENALTY KICKS MR KARTIK. DID MEXICO SCORE TODAY ON A PENALTY KICK. AND HOW WAS CASTROS GOAL A FLUKE WAS BRADLEYS GOAL A FLUKE TOO IN COLUMBUS WHEN THE BALL BOUNCED INTO PLACE SO HE CAN KICK IT IN. CMON MR KARTIK DONT TRY TO USE ANY EXCUSES PLEASE. IT JUST MAKES AMERICAN FANS LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF CRY BABY AMERICAN SOCCER FAN IDIOTS

    • True, and I stand by that. A dodgy PK against Honduras and El Salvador in qualifying, a dodgy PK versus Nicaragua in the Gold Cup, struggles against Costa Rica needing PKs to win and two horrible foul calls against Honduras late at Azteca last August when they had a 1-0 lead on you. Mexico has earned their two wins against the US this summer but have NOT earned all their wins this last year against smaller CONCACAF nations.

  43. big G says:

O I MEANT GOLD CUP NOT WORLD CUP HAHA

  44. Greg says:

Mexican fans are the worst fans I have ever seen. they have no class what so ever for the opposing fans. They need fuckin fences the control them. Do u see that ANYWHERE in the US? Absolutely not. They act like monkeys when their team is playing. It shows what a trashy country it is.

Know wonder 20 million of them live in THIS country.

    • Roberto says:

I would dearly advise you to go back to 4th grade and finish elementary school at the trailer park where you were raised, do not show off your ignorance in public, you illiterate hick.

      ” what so ever”??

      “know wonder”??

Talking about fences to control wild, classless, football fans, you should go to Ireland or Great Britain to get a taste of uncivilized, alcohol brain-damaged fans.

  45. Steve says:

Turn off the caps lock douche bag

  46. AgentCooper says:

A couple of things. First, I think the Mexican fans are great. They really know the game. Also, I was at the Gold Cup semifinal in Chicago rooting for the U.S. and was torn in the Costa Rica-Mexico game. For that game, I thought the Mexican fans were fantastic, passionate fans. They created a tremendous atmosphere, and thought it was a great experience.

Second, I was quite disappointed with the U.S. midfield in this game. This is a big concern for me going forward.

  47. JMart says:

Kartik, the level of discourse on the comments section has really devolved lately. What’s with ‘ALL CAPS’ guy?

I’m a huge US fan, but I also try to be objective – Mexico deserved to win the game. The fact that the US even scored a goal was suprising given how little they held the ball, and the couldn’t even pass our way out of the back. When you sit back and defend your own third for most of the game, you’re bound to lose.

I don’t think Bradley’s tactics were poor, but with a 1-1 game where your opponent needs the win, a coach has to decide if you go for the win or do you go even more negative with your subs and hold on for a draw. Actually, I’m not sure that Bradley had the right personnel to play totally negative football, so he brought in positive, attacking subs and moved Dempsey up top. The U.S. held the ball a little more after that, but it wasn’t really enough.

Had Davies connected on Holden’s cross into Mexico’s box, we might be having a completely different conversation right now.

Overall, it’s dissapointing but not unexpected. Unfortunately, this is the game I get most excited about every 4 years, and now we’ll have to get our hopes up in 2013 (probably only to get dashed again).

Keep up the good work Kartik.

  48. big G says:

WELL SAID AGENT COOPER. UR A GREAT WHITE GUY DAT I HAVE LOTS OF RESPECT. UR NOT THOSE RACIST ASS WHITE FOLKS DAT TALK OUT OF THERE ASS AND DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FUTBOL. U SHOULD GO FOR MEXICO AGENT COOPER SO WE CAN SHOW U HOW MEXICANS ARE PATIONATE AND SPIRITED NOT JUST ABOUT FUTBOL BUT OUR COUNTRY.

  49. Jon says:

Look, I know you guys know Phil Schoen and all, but he was simply unlistenable for the vast majority of fans. It almost made me miss Dave O’Brien. He actually said the US was managed by Bruce Arena at one point and neither one of the announcers ever discussed tactics, what players were playing poorly, etc. Woeful job.

    • AgentCooper says:

Jon, with all due respect, I’ve just got to disagree with you. I think Phil is the best American announcer. No doubt that there are others outside the U.S. that are better. But if it is a job requirement is that you must have an American-born announcer doing the U.S. games (which the requirement seems to be for whatever reason), then Phil would be my choice hands down. I obviously have a long list of others that I would have preferred over Balboa, but having Phil teamed up with him instead over Dave O’Brien made it much more palatable.

  50. Kerlon says:

    1. US plays defense-counter because they are technically inferior to mexico. They lack the skill to take over possesion/ hold the ball.

    2. Ching lives off the work of good midfielders who can link up with him. Anyone can be a good midfielder in a league full of mls defenders. Aside form that he does not contribute. Too slow, no vision. He makes the whole team work so that he can score.

    3. Altidore was a better option than Ching.

    4. Spector is technically superior to cherundolo. He has vison and precision to make assists. (SA???!!!)

  51. RioSoccer says:

I hate losing to Mexico. How Castillo didn’t get red carded in the game only shows the ref was a bit “off” on some of his call. Most Mexican fans don’t know crap about football – they just think they do. In the last 10 years the US is what 15-4 against Mexico. Outside of fortress Azteca, they’re VERY beatble.

Saying that – they deserved to win today. Whats up with Bradley’s tactics. No outside/wide players, did they play a 4-2-2-2? In the first half they switched sides but noone there – except Carlos who isn’t an attacking wing back. How many times did the midfield or defense just give the ball away? Just makes me sick. Midfield seemed overwelmed except Donovan. I really wish the US would have went after the Mexicans instead of bunking down or at least ACT like you know what your doing countering.

  52. Jammer says:

First, Mexico played the better game in that the US hardly controlled the ball. I can’t say US deserved to win.

But it appeared to me that Donovan was fouled on the turnover directly before Mexico’s first goal. There were no replays so I’m not sure but if its true, you can’t say the referee didn’t affect the outcome. Also Castillo should have been booted.

Of all Bradley’s mistakes you could talk about, the most obvious one is Spector. He had beautiful assists against Spain and Brazil, but apparently he’s not good enough for Mexico.

If Holden is in the game, he should take set piece kicks instead of Donovan.

  53. SSReporters says:

The goal scored by Davies was the only shot on net.

    Unbelievable.

  54. master chief says:

I dont understand why we have to fight, I am mexican but the truth is
(and I admit it)that quite a few of us were kind of scared of the nice football youve been practicing (confederations cup and stuff), and the shitty football that we had, defensive like is your thing.. good thing we woke up in time! hope we see you in Southafrica!

  55. Rafael says:

Bob Bradley needs to get fired. He cannot coach at this level. We need an attack-minded coach who can put togther a formation. The only person in MLS that can do that is Kinnear. Outside of Kinnear, we need a European coach.

This game shows Spector should play at RB and that Bocanegra not only shouldn’t be captain, but shouldn’t even start ever again.
We seriously to to look for a completely new LB that is not in our current player pool, Like Orozco or getting Castillo to play for us at LB.

We need a new midfiled with new players like Torres, Edu, and Jones.

  56. Jack says:

agree with the ratings for the most part except for Dempsey. His performance was below average i.e. he should be rated below a 5. Bob Bradley should have started Torres as this is kind of his backyard and players always seem to play better when they come home. We’ve gotta do better than Bocanegra, bring that left footed Mexican back that is switching allegiance to the US team.

  57. Kerlon says:

At this point we cant fire bradly. That would shake things up too much, the WC is just next yr. The loss is what most experts outside US and Mexico would expect. We must realize all the advantages the mexicans had…just as we can easily beat them in Columbus.–>> THE US WINS 3-2 ON AGGREGATE

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE U-17 WC. …CANT WAIT TO WATCH MCINERNEY, LUIS GIL, JEROME, GYAU.

  58. Rebecca Jill says:

Still can’t figure out why Spector, who assisted or was a part of 2 goals in Confed Cup, was not in the game.

Overall, after 1st Mexican goal, Mexico played the better game.

  59. mr always right says:

JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IS VERY BEATABLE IN THE CONCACAF WHEN THEY DON’T PLAY HOME, AND THAT’S WHY THE US IS 15/4 AGAINST MEXICO IN THE PAST 10 YEARS. HOW MANY TIMES HAS THE US WON IN MEXICO IN THE PAST 10 YEARS?? OHHH THATS RIGHT! FRIENDLIES ARE ALWAYS PLAYED IN THE US FOR BUSINESS PURPOSES.SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, HOME ADVANTAGE IS EVERYTHING IN CONCACAF MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.FIRST 5 QUALIFIERS = 2 HOME AND 3 AWAY MATCHES FOR MEXICO AND RESULTED IN 6 POINTS. NEXT 5 GAMES ARE 2 AWAY AND 3 HOME GAMES. THERE YOU HAVE IT MEXICO WILL WIN 9 PTS PLUS MAYBE 1 TIE AND A LOSS AT COSTA RICA . WE WILL BE IN THE WORLD CUP FOR SURE !! VIVA MEXICO!

  60. David says:

    Hey RioSoccer cool down.
Mexico is and has always been the best team in the zone historically. The USA team does not have the international poise and technique to compete head to head with the best yet, nor has the poise to sustain the pressure of hostile environments like the ones found in Argentina, Brazil, or the Azteca Stadium.

  61. mr always right says:

    FINAL STANDINGS
    COSTA RICA 22 PTS
    MEXICO 19PTS
US 19PTS ( LOWER GOAL DIFFEERENCE)
HONDURAS 18 PTS (WILL PLAY A SOUTHAMERICAN TEAM TO QUALIFY)

  62. mr always right says:

EL SALVADOR AND TRINIDAD IM SORRY BUT MAYBE NEXT TIME ;)

  63. gmonsoon43 says:

Reading this thread and other threads about the game is just disheartening! Mexican fans have a right to trash talk us about the game they just beat us. Would we have not talked trash had we won? The awful part is the utter crap that is coming from both sides, American and Mexican. There is absolutely no need to resort to name calling, racial comments and/or insulting each others cultures.

  64. Rex says:

2-1 Mexico at Azteca. That’s a pretty expected result if you ask me. The bunkering tactics were a little disappointing to watch, though.

As a Ching fan, even I had trouble finding any positives from his performance, but with the way the game was played no forward other than a speed guy would have had a chance to look good. Ching’s game is in the box in the run of play (Davies missed header from Holden would have been Ching goal). So if Bradley’s strategy was to bunker in, then he should have never played Ching. Ching still has a place on the team, but only if the tactics demand it.

The only person on the field that was as absent as Ching, was Bradley. Where was he? He played, right? Has this guy ever been subbed out in a game under Bob?

What about Torres. Quit playing with this kid Bob! Don’t keep calling him in if you have no intention of playing him. What did the USA need in this game? Someone who can trap the ball and comfortably hold it at his feet. Someone who can slow things down and build an attack. This is Torres and he has been absolutely insulted by Bob.

  65. Roger says:

To me the most shocking thing about this game was the fact that the US could not string together two passes. Even in prior loses at Azteca we were able to bunker and still lost, but did maintain some possession and created a few second half chances or half chances. Yesterday, after minute 20 was the worst display by a full American “A” side against Mexico since the 1993 Gold Cup final and IMHO, Bob Bradley needs to be fired based on this performance alone and the team’s inability to take advantage of a good weather day in Mexico City and the fact we had no tactics at all.

  66. Jay says:

Mexican fans can talk shit for now but don’t get too loud because your in 4th place and there is no telling who you’ll get from CONMEBOL.

Enjoy your bragging rights victory in a WC Qualifier, will see what you guys do in South Africa when it really matters…..thats if you even make it.

    Adios!

    • Fernando says:

We talk whatever we want Jay… and guess what? if we go to play against a CONMEBOL team because of that 4th place you can be sure that we´ll be in South Africa since we perform better against South American teams… and that´s a proven fact!

And in South Africa´10 we´ll advance more than US..like always…that´s another proven fact! …

      Adios! :D

  67. Watson says:

It is no coincidence that Mexico ALWAYS gets further than us in big tournaments except in 2002, when we had a solid spine with Pope, O’Brien, Reyna and McBride all up the middle.

This game was a joke. The result was inevitable, granted but the effort was lacking. Our teams in the 1990 to 2006 time period NEVER quit and showed a total lack of interest down there like this even when getting beat badly. We never had guys more concerned by club football that they are dying to catch the next flight back to Europe.

    The current situation is unacceptable.

  68. OL says:

Bring jermaine jones and eddie johnson speed speed!!! ,dempsey once again a no show in wc qualifier, donovan a no show on the road in wc qualifier. …hey coach bradley you dumb ass if your going to defend and look to counter attack you need speed up front so why start b .ching next time bring eddie johnson or even adu to play on top to use his speed ,also shouldve subed 3 (davies ,ching ,clark) and left bradley, donovan holden ,benny, torres to hold the middle, and play a 4-5-1 taking away the middle with dempsey on top…let them play for more than 10 minutes and maybe they will score some more goals. you better win the next two or else your going to south america ! hey bocanegra have some balls and rush to block the @#$%in shot not give him the all the frekin angle. have some heart capitan ….thank god it was a single …..guts the usa needs to win the next two period ,for all the people that say dont worry just check out the schedule will honduras ,costa rica or mexico lose@ home no!!!

  69. Soccer Fan says:

All this conjecture over what essentially was a game that was lost by the official. Latin officials always screw the USA in big games and we would have at worst gotten a draw and likely one if the officials did not have it so in for us.

  70. Timothy H. says:

This USA team is tactically inept. Virtually no ability to hold the ball. They don’t switch fields consistently, Limited concept of moving off the ball to support the player with the ball. They just kick it away over and over. Their concept of attacking soccer is to go with the long ball & go direct to the goal. Thats about it. Keep the ball !
Thats what cost us the two goal lead v Brazil & last night’s exhibition v Mexico was pitiful. True the US players played with a lot of heart & the early goal by Davies was terrific.Maybe the ref was in over his head but that doesnt explain the total lack of ability to knock the ball around and keep it away from their opponent. The words out. Play the USA and pressure the ball all over the field. They wont be able to exploit that tactic and they will cheaply give up possession. Really inexplicable to me. The technical ability is there. This seems like a coaching problem.

  71. Angel says:

This is a guy who Mr. Bob Bradley & Peter Nowak let go and he is playing well with his new team and that is Arturo Alvarez. Imagine him with Torres in the same lineup. you can see a 6min. piece on you tube enjoy and give me your opinion please.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfVc_-d3i3Q

  72. Mr.T says:

“Yeah, since “=FUTBOL” is about trying to harass an injured player on the ground while he can barley walk. ” Injured player??? or a player who is faking trying to buy time?
Yes, it did deserve a red card, but bocanegra and atleast another U.S defender also deseverd a second yellow card for their dirty play.
Every time, U.S fans and media blame the Ref….and I agree the ref was not good but his performance and calls didnt affect the result. Mexico played better for 85+ minutes.
Those who call Castros goal a fluke…do you mean it would be nearly impossible to repeat that same goal under the same circumstances???? OBVIOUSLY, how many players can repeat that same of espectacular goal over and over again, tell me who???? It was a beautiful goal, similar to the one argentina scored agains mexico in the 06WC, it was one of the best goals of the tournament.
U.S fans, please recognize that in futbol, you are an average team, that doesnt know how to play good futbol.
Yeah yeah i can already see the comments you will writte: “If we are not good why did we beat spain”….
The answer: This is Futbol, the impossible sometimes happens. Just ask Bolivia (6-0 agains argentina). U.S beating Spain, now that was a fluke.

    • Rob says:

Oh Mr. T, where to begin with you and your horrific grammar…

“Injured player??? or a player who is faking trying to buy time?” – So I’m assuming you missed the part where Davies had to come out of the game with cramps and Altidore was subbed in?

“Yes, it did deserve a red card, but bocanegra and atleast another U.S defender also deserved a second yellow card for their dirty play.” – Maybe, but you’re going to sit there and say Mexico only receiving one card to the US’ four is consistent? Even when Mexico had plenty of fouls that weren’t carded? Come on.

“U.S fans, please recognize that in futbol, you are an average team, that doesnt know how to play good futbol.” – Your an average team too who hasn’t gotten a single point on the road yet in the CONCACAF final round. What do you have to say about the 2-0 win on US soil back earlier in the qualifying? At least we got a goal on your “sacred” ground.

  73. Rolando Mota del Campo says:

MEXICO will rule once again!!!….We will retake our stolen territories. California, Nuevo Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada,1/2 of Oklahoma,Kansas,Nebraska and Wyoming….May be not in my lifetime but it will happen!!!

  74. MEXICO>usa says:

You’re damn right we will rule again. NEVER underestimate the determination of Mexicans. WE WILL NOT BE STOPPED.

The usa is nothing. Mexico has always been superior and always will be.

  75. Adam Edg says:

Maybe we lost b/c one of our best players, whom we all noticed was virtually nonexistent on the field the other day, has swine flu. That’s right, Donovan has a confirmed case of H1N1.
    http://goal.com/en-us/news/1110/major-league-soccer/2009/08/13/1439376/landon-donovan-afflicted-with-h1n1-virus
Now I could make a joke about this beign a Mexican conspiracy, but I won’t. As much as I personally dislike Landon, I respect him as a major contributor to my national team. I hope for a speedy recovery.

  76. peter osgood says:

Mr Edg, why do you so personally dislike Donovan? And then why would you refer to him by his first name as if you know him personally?

  77. Adam Edg says:

“MEXICO will rule once again!!!….We will retake our stolen territories. California, Nuevo Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Nevada,1/2 of Oklahoma,Kansas,Nebraska and Wyoming….May be not in my lifetime but it will happen!!! ”
Ok, history lessons are definitely needed here. First of all Texas fought for independence from Mexico; the US merely helped. Originally after winning its independence from Mexico, Texas was its own nation. The US government coerced them into joing the US. Texas was its own nation between 1836-1845. More land was added to Texas in the Mexican Cession of 1848.
The Mexican Cession of 1848 also added what is now California, Nevada, and Utah to the US as territories. Most of modern Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado were added as well. Only tiny pieces of Wyoming, Kansas (little pice of the SW corner), and Oklahoma (panhandle) were also obtained during the MC. The rest of Arizona was PURCHASED from Mexico later. It should be noted that the residents of these areas fought the Mexican government to join the US.
The bulk (like more than 3/4) of Kansas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma were PURCHASED in 1803 from FRANCE as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The other chunk of Colorado was also purchased at this time. This was 45 years before the Mexican-American war. By the way, SPAIN controlled the reamining territories you referenced at that time.
As far as taking back the “stolen” territories, do not count on it. The Mexican government has no interest in taking any such actions. The people of Mexico, other than a few nutjobs (not unlike the Militia Men patrolling the US/Mex border), have no interest in declaring all out war with the US. We may not be able to beat you in soccer, but… If Mexico ever truly wanted to relcaim those lands, they would have done so during WWII. The Nazis had an interest in using Mexico to invade and destroy the US. It never happened.
“The usa is nothing. Mexico has always been superior and always will be. ”
As long as you are referring to the soccer field, I will respect your opinion.
If you are referring to the nations themselves, I have to ask where you live. It had better be IN Mexico. A related question, if Mexico is the end-all be-all greatest country in the world, then why do so many people risk their lives to come to the US? Why would somebody leave their warm paradise for the frigid temps of Minnesota if Mexico is so spectacular?
I am not racist; I have many friends whose families immigrated from Mexico. They left to have a better life in the US – their words, not mine. They are working to get their families here permanently and legally so they too can have a better life. They have no desire to return to Mexico for anything other than vacations. The same can be said for all of the Central American, African, and South Asian immigrant that I know.
And I love going to Mexico. Not a fan of Tijuana or the way American spring break kids have destroyed the beauty of Cozumel and Cancun. I hope to one day see a game at Azteca, follow the Mexican league, and support the Mexican national team after the US, Germany, and England (my country and the countries of my family). I actively support the development of Mexican lacrosse as well. I just do not understand the hatred, racism, and anti-US sentiment on these boards from what appear to be US-based Mexico fans.

  78. Adam Edg says:

“Mr Edg, why do you so personally dislike Donovan? And then why would you refer to him by his first name as if you know him personally?”
    1. Because I do not like him. He has proven himself to be selfish, whiny, and egotistical on many occasions. His attacks in The Beckham Experiement did little to earn my praise as well. But I still cheer for him on the USMNT b/c he represents my country and has great talent, which I respect.
    2. Because this is a response to a blog, not professionally published article written by me. Why does it matter?

  79. Andrew says:

This game was a fraud. Thank the ref. We still own Mexico and dominate CONCACAF. All this over reaction towards Bradley should be directed at the refs and the scummy Mexican fans. We should have taken Veracruz when we could have in 1916.

    • MEXICO>usa says:

Hey Andrew, FUCK YOU. Mexico is the giant of the CONCACAF. You don’t own shit. Not even Haiti.

The ref was fair, and usa fans are the classless piles of trash.

You didn’t take Veracruz, but we’re taking over the entire usa, piece by piece. I hope you like it when your daughter marries a Mexican.

  80. El Tri says:

fans like andrew is why many south of the border do not respect the gringos.

kartik as is typical has a fair piece which is a little american biased but he knows his football.

    on to saprissa!

  81. Daniel Feuerstein says:

Big G: How about stop acting like clueless idiot when it was me who wrote about the Gold Cup Final. Not Kartik. You are the one who is acting like you think you know everything.

Yes the Penalty call in my eyes was still crap and Mexico did deserve the win after our players had a melt down when they were losing the match after the penalty was converted. Yes that long distance rip was struck, but your altitude knocked it down and it hit the crossbar and in. Anywhere else from that distance and it’s completly over the crossbar. All I saw from Mexico in the first half in the Azteca was desperation and long shots to get a goal.

You act like a big man but when the USA beats Mexico, you are probably acting like a small little child who wines alot. The next time someone writes something on Mexico Vs USA, make sure you get the correct writer which was me on the Gold Cup Final.

Don’tt bother commenting anymore, you’ve already used your quarter.
