I don’t have to tell all of you what’s been written on the internet from the local NYC/NJ beat writers that follow this club from the days of the MetroStars and are now RBNY. All of us follow the tables in Major League Soccer and as it’s starring right in your face as well as the faces of the NY Supporters are two wins and a total of ten points. After a magical playoff run into their first MLS Cup Final last season, there real moment came in a one goal victory at Rio Tinto Stadium in last season’s Western Conference Final. That victory over Real Salt Lake propelled them into their first International Club Competition.

Their defeat in the 2008 MLS Cup Final meant that they would be starting in the Qualifying Round of the CONCACAF Champions League and their opponent in the Goal Aggregate series would be Trinidad & Tobago’s W. Connection. Their first leg match on the road at Marabell, T&T on Thursday, July 30th & home at Giants Stadium on Wednesday, August 5th both matches will be seen on Fox Soccer Channel.

Tempers are at an alarming “WE WANT BLOOD NOW!” moment & to be fair I don’t blame everyone for feeling like this because after reaching the final last season there has been higher expectations for this club to actually make a major mark in the league as well as winning a couple of trophies to go into the glass case that’s barely filled.

While the club did try to fill the roster with depth their problem have been either chemistry, not following the game plan or the players are just no good. During the MLS Summer Transfer window RBNY brought in former Colorado Rapids keeper Bouna Coundoul while releasing Jon Conway, Central defender Leo Krupnik from Maccabbi Haifi in the Israel league & on a free transfer from Red Bull Salzberg Midfielder Ernest Obster who can play on the left or in the middle of the field.

Right now this is their last chance at doing something big and if they can’t get past W. Connection and enter the group stage, then I believe that both Jeff Agoos and Juan Carlos Osorio won’t finish the remaining matches on their MLS Schedule and the rebuilding will begin after the end of this regular season in releasing some of the players Osorio brought. I am trying to be objective in this piece and going thru this entire disappointment of a season I have to say that as a supporter of this club I am angry. I thought that they would finally become a good club and move away from average. But sadly they can’t seem to get out of their own way and it’s been a nightmare since their passionless match at the Seattle Sounders to start the season.

Here in the NYC/NJ area the supporters are angry, upset and they already want Agoos, Osorio & now Erik Stover’s head on a silver platter and they are already screaming that Red Bull in Austria doesn’t care about the club. They are already screaming for another re-branding and this time they want the famed powerhouse name from the old NASL in the New York Cosmos. While that’s all well and good I’m afraid it’s going to be more than a name change to fix these problems and unfortunately if it does happen by Red Bull or if anyone buys the club from them it would be shaming that famous name and the players that once wore that famous crest back in those days.

When the first horrible season of the MetroStars happened in 1999, they were coached by former USA Head Coach Bora Militinovic from the 1994 World Cup. From the reversal of losing three of their first four to earning three wins in their first four, the entire year crapped out. There were some rumblings but because it was Metro it was more acceptable. Now ten seasons later the roar has been a deafening scream that won’t end because the supporters believe Red Bull doesn’t care. If they didn’t care then this club would’ve been moving with the NFL’s NY Giants & NY Jets into the new Meadowlands stadium with field turf and any stadium in Harrison, NJ would’ve been pulled off the drawing board. After 10 years of frustration as the MetroStars, Red Bull has had at least a decent 2006 and two solid years afterwards till this current one. But next year Red Bull Arena will open and either it starts the 2010 MLS Season, or a possible early opening to a home leg match into the knockout stages.

This has officially become the last chance saloon for Red Bull NY in these next two matches of the CONCACAF Champions League. But to be fair my gut feeling is that it doesn’t matter if there is success or failure for the club, Juan Carlos Osorio & Jeff Agoos are officially done at the end of this season and Red Bull in Austria will find someone else either from within or outside the club. But my money is on Richie Williams who had a solid stint as Interim during the 2006 season.
