Liverpool have been handed a massive boost with the news that Fernando Torres has signed a new contract with the club. The extension of the Spanish forward’s contract is a key step forward as manager Rafa Benitez continues to turn his side into genuine title contenders.

The former Atletico Madrid striker has signed a four year extension which will keep him at Anfield until 2014. Reds fans can rejoice in the news that Torres will be wearing a Liverpool football kit for many years to come.

“Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better,” Reds manager Rafa Benitez told the club’s official website.

“Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He’s a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game.

“We’ve made huge progress this season and now we need to take the next step. We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence.

“This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club.”

With Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard having already penned new deals, the core of the Liverpool squad is under contract for the foreseeable future and if Benitez can add some real quality over the summer, they must certainly be considered strong contenders to win the title away from Manchester United, who have looked decidedly wobbly in recent months.

Since his first game in a Liverpool shirt, Torres has been a key part of the Liverpool team, scoring a number of both crucial and spectacular goals and making himself a firm favourite of the Kop.
