Don Garber’s hopes that USL would be shut out of the 2009/10 version of the CONCACAF Champions League have not been realized. Last night in Trinidad, the Islanders recorded a 2-0 semifinal win in the CFU Final Four over Haitian Champions Tempete. Kendall Jagdeosingh scored the winning goal on a cross from Scott Jones early in extra time and Peter Villegas scored another later to provide the margin for victory.

The Islanders will face W Connection of Trindad and Tobago in the final Sunday. This will represent a hostile road atmosphere for the Islanders but after the USL-1 side advanced to the semifinals of the recently completed inaugural CONCACAF Champions League, Colin Clarke’s men are very much used to playing in difficult away environments.

Toronto FC is close to clinching the Canadian birth in the Champions League after two consecutive victories over rivals at BMO Field. Montreal fired head coach John Liminatis after blowing a four goal aggregate goal lead in the CONCACAF CL quarterfinals, limping out of the gates in USL-1 and then losing to Toronto the other night.

Last night under new coach Marc Dos Santos Montreal drew at home with Charleston in front of close to 13,000 at Saputo Stadium.

Another note. Beginning immediately I am contributing to an exciting new site USL News. For those MLS fans who complain that I cover USL too much on this site much of the USL coverage will be written exclusively for that site while we continue to cover USL in perhaps a different way on this site.
