Premier League Daily Digest, April 6, 2009

What a brilliant Premier League weekend it was. The highlights, of course, being the spectacular match between Aston Villa and Manchester United with Federico Macheda’s last minute curling shot that ended in the corner of the net past the reach of Brad Friedel. And then the last minute goal from Liverpool’s Yossi Benayoun when a minute before all seemed lost.

It was a perfect weekend in the Premier League. The sun was shining. And oh what a joy it must have been to be at Old Trafford or Craven Cottage if you were a Manchester United or Liverpooll fan respectively. Sure, the TV experience was just as exciting (especially as we witnessed Macheda’s father weeping tears of joy), but the noise and joy witnessed at Old Trafford was something special.

Both Macheda’s goal and Benayoun’s last minute winner were season defining goals. Whether it means Liverpool or Manchester United will win the league we won’t find out for several more weeks. And don’t forget about Chelsea who are creeping up behind and looked impressive against Newcastle United.

Here are a few of the other stories that caught my eye today:
