Ramón Calderon went into the emergency board meeting as president of Real Madrid and came out a disgraced Richard Nixon-type figure.

Ever since the Marca news story broke earlier in the week where the Spanish sports daily (and often touted Real Madrid mouthpiece) where Calderón committed fraud in last month’s general assembly while trying to get his budget proposal passed.  During the assembly, he gave access various non-members or expired members that made the difference in his proposal passing.

For many this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The writing was on the wall when Calderón considered resigning yesterday, but took back his original statement.  That changed on Friday when the pressure from the board (rivals and allies alike) became too much and he was left with no other choice.

According to a statement released on the Real Madrid website, the exiting will hold a press conference at 18:00 (local time) and that is where current vice president Vicente Boluda will take over on an interim basis until elections can be called.

Calderón, 57, began to make a name for himself at Real Madrid when he obtained an executive role and opposed former president Ramón Mendoza back in the 1990’s.  He was also the president who changed the Galácticos policy at Real Madrid after Florentino Pérez brought in the money but not the titles.  Calderón promised the Madrid constituents that he was going to bring in Kaká, Arjen Robben, Cesc Fabregas, and Cristiano Ronaldo.  He was only able to bring Robben, while putting himself in a negative situation as far as publicity in Europe and all over the world as a team that meddled and pillaged teams.

He was able to get lesser name players but with a high level of potential as is the case with Gonzalo Higuaín, Lassana Diarra, and Marcelo.
