Arrival of Match Day One for Serie A fans provides several classic pairings including, Roma v. Napoli, Sampdoria v. Internazionale and Fiorentina v. Juventus.

Those who remember last year’s final outcome between Juventus and Fiorentina, know they won’t be disappointed.  Fiorentina took 4 points from both seasonal encounters, drawing the first at home 1 – 1 and besting the Bianconeri in the return match 3 – 2 at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino.

This time round Juventus are stronger then before with new aquistitions of Amauri, Olof Meleberg and Christian Polsen . With the absence of injured Viola hit-man Adrian Mutu, and off-season transfer of defensive stalwart Tomáš Ujfaluši to Atletico Madrid, the Bianconeri should be able to redeem that 3 – 2 loss from their last meeting.  (the winning goal was courtesy of substitute Pablo Osvaldo  in the 93th minute, who combined with Papa Waigo, another Prandelli substitute 03.02.08)

Words on the last Bianconeri v. Viola encounter

mcalcio – In the last minute of stoppage time, when a draw seemed to be the generally accepted result (neither team had shown any significant desire to win it), Fiorentina made their last bet and won big. Another defensive mistake sent Papa Waigo in the clear on the right wing, ready to deliver a hard cross towards Pablo Osvaldo in the middle. Diving header (à la Batistuta) and 3-2 Fiorentina.

tribalfooball.com –Papa Waigo was outstanding for Fiorentina in their come-from-behind victory over Juventus yesterday.  “Will this goal guarantee me a start next time? No, I am just ready to play – either as a starter or off the bench,” said a humble Waigo afterwards.  “Third place? It’s too early to say.”

(Papa Waigo in post-match celebration would lose his pants but gain unforgettable triumph for club history.)

I’ll be watching Fiorentina v. Junventus as the marquee venue.
