Who Should Bob Bradley Select for the Guatemala Qualifier?

With just over a week to go until the first US World Cup 2010 qualifier of the group stage at Guatemala who would you like to see called in? Edson Buddle has been impressive for the LA Galaxy and as mentioned above Ante Razov despite a recent injury has a history of scoring in the 1-1 draw versus Guatemala in 2000 when he was replacing the injured Brian McBride. With many top Americans possibly out of the mix for this qualifier due to the Olympic Football Tournament who else should get the call? Veterans like Frankie Hejduk and Steve Ralston, or is this due to the absences a chance to look at middle aged MLS players like Davy Arnaud, Kyle Beckerman or Arturo Alvaraz?

  1. Soccer Guru says:

The idea of picking Arnuad or Alvarez is idiotic.

Go with the core team plus some vets like Razov, Ralston and maybe even Marsch to see us through this game without Freddy, Mo Edu and Bradley.

  2. Phillip says:

    Howard in goal.

Cherundolo, Bocanegra, Onyewu, Pearce in defense.

Dempsey, Mastroeni, Donovan, Beasley in midfield.

Ante Razov and Kenny Cooper up top.

  3. John Harris says:

Cooper for sure needs to be picked.

  4. Flash says:

Road qualifiers are not the time to introduce new players to the squad. Razov yes, Cooper and Buddle, no.

  5. Chop says:

I don’t Beasley will be healthy enought to participate.

Otherwise, just go with the tried and true veterans. I agree with the previous poster in that road qualifiers is not time to bring in(and start)newbies. Bring in Buddle and Cooper and maybe they can get some mop up minutes.

This is most likely the starting X1 (provided they are healthy)

    —————– Howard ——————–

    Dolo ——— Gooch —– Boca ——- Pearce

    Dempsey ——– Mastro — Donovan —– Lewis

    ———- Ching ———– Johnson ———-

Anyone wanna bet that is the starting X1?

And please, no Ante Razov. We (American soccer fans) must resist the temptation to call up players that are hot in MLS (and it’s arguable whether Razov is or not, he’s always injured) and just give them caps.

You have to also look and see if a player is ultimately of international quality. I’m sorry, Razov is a very limited player and whilst he could score goals in CONCACAF, I think we could do better with more mobile and effective players like Buddle and Cooper.

I’m glad I found this site today thanks to the link to the MLS vs USSF story.

Chop, your lineup looks 100% right, other than maybe seeing Dempsey and Landon flipped.

Expect to see Dempsey playing deeper than usual.

Keep in mind Landon and Ching play well together.

EJ will do well in qualifying. He always does. His goal scoring record in CONCACAF warrants his call up instead of taking a chance on Cooper or Buddle at this point.

  7. Flash says:

Let Beasley and Convey sit back for a year and ride Eddie Lewis’ new found confidence on the left side until he is too old to run. That is my only request.
