Tottenham Hotspur has announced a major coup after beating Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and several other teams to the signing of one of the most sought after midfielders in the world, Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb. In doing so, Spurs has smashed their transfer record
with a fee believed to be in excess of £20 million.

The Croatian midfielder met with Newcastle United earlier this week and many believed he was going to sign for the Tyneside club. However, Tottenham Hotspur came in with a last gasp offer which was accepted by Dinamo Zagreb.

Modric will now undertake a medical and will apply for a work permit.

The Croat has 24 caps for Croatia and will be playing for his nation in this summer’s Euro 2008 tournament. According to Wikipedia, “he usually plays as playmaker, on the left side of the field. His natural position is that of central midfielder and he plays as playmaker solely due to his capabilities to cover that role as well and to leave room for designated defensive midfielders in Dinamo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.”
